What is the career path for a pediatrician?

By Zippia Team - Jan. 8, 2023

The career path for a pediatrician begins with the completion of a four-year medical degree, followed by a three-year residency. After completing residency, pediatricians can begin working. They often work in clinics, but may choose to work at hospitals as well. This choice is up to the graduate.

Pediatricians often begin their careers working under more qualified, experienced orthodontists in clinical settings. They generally take on the simpler clients to start with and move up from there. Many pediatricians may choose to pursue professional organizations as a means of networking and continued education.

Many pediatricians may eventually take over the practice they were working at so they become that experienced pediatrician. They may also choose to open their own practice. Either way, this allows for more independence and earning potential.

Some pediatricians may choose to eventually pursue a fellowship to work in a more narrow field of pediatrics, such as a fellowship in pediatric oncology. These fellowships would allow pediatricians to then complete research and work solely in that subspecialty.
