What is the career path for an asset manager?
The career path for an asset manager includes jobs as a junior analyst, senior analyst, and lead portfolio manager. There is a direct line of progression for a career in asset management, which can be great for many people. Asset managers hold bachelor's degrees in a related field such as business or finance before beginning to work.
Most asset managers start off as junior analysts. Some smaller companies simply have analysts and don't even have junior analysts. Larger corporations start people as junior analysts and then, with experience, they become analysts. These require a bachelor's degree. Without additional degrees, you often cannot continue upward from an analyst.
If you earn a master's degree and have experience as an analyst, a person can then move on to working as a senior analyst. Many people stay in this position for their entire careers. If someone wants to seek management positions, they can do so by pursuing a position as a portfolio manager.
Some portfolio management positions just require a master's degree and experience, but the higher portfolio management positions, such as a lead portfolio manager, often require an MBA or even a Ph.D., depending on the position. If you choose to seek these positions, you may need additional degrees, but you then can pursue a management track that can go many ways.
