What is the career path for an interior designer?

By Zippia Team - Nov. 16, 2022

The career path for an interior designer includes jobs as an interior decorator, residential interior designer, and interior design director. Most interior designers will hold either an associate's degree or a bachelor's degree. Depending on your career goals, you may want to look into graduate studies as well.

Interior designers generally begin their careers working as interior decorators. This position requires basic knowledge of interior design principles and processes. Here, you will develop and implement decorative plans for clients.

After about 5 years of experience, you can move up as a residential interior designer. In this position, you will develop and implement design plans for entire home spaces. You will work closely with interior decorators and will have more responsibility for a project. With enough skill, you can then move into a director position where you will oversee projects.

Interior designers may choose to work in residential, commercial, or restorative fields. These all require different focuses and may require different qualifications. Restoration, specifically, often requires more education in restoration and the history of architecture.

Certifications are often crucial for advancing as an interior designer as they validate your skill in specific specializations. This will also expand your career opportunities. If you find yourself interested in interior design, but not wanting to pursue a job specifically in it, a job in fashion design or landscape architecture could be a good fit.
