What is the DHS authorization?

Employers may find it concerning to see "Valid for Work Only With DHS Authorization" on a potential employee's social security card. However, this doesn't mean they cannot be hired.

Employers must ask the employee for additional documentation to prove their work authorization, as specified by the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification form. Any worker with supplementary documentation that meets the requirements of the I-9 form can be hired.

It's essential to note that having a social security card with the endorsement "Valid for Work Only With DHS Authorization" doesn't impact its validity regarding immigration status. This type of card is called a restricted card, which cannot be used on its own to prove work authorization.

Instead, it must be accompanied by proof of work authorization. In contrast, an unrestricted card without endorsements can be used to demonstrate work authorization.

The Social Security Administration issues three types of cards, all displaying your name and social security number. For individuals who aren't U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents, they may have a work restriction listed on their card. The three types of cards are as follows:

1. Type One: Shows your name and social security number, enabling you to work without any restrictions. It's given to U.S. citizens and people lawfully admitted to the United States permanently.





2. Type Two: Shows your name and social security number with the restriction "Valid for Work Only With DHS Authorization." It's given to people lawfully admitted to the United States temporarily, with DHS authorization to work.

   It's issued to people from other countries who are lawfully admitted to the United States without work authorization from DHS, but have a valid non-work reason for needing a social security number, or require a number due to a federal law requiring a social security number to get a benefit or service.
