What is the difference between a clinical nurse and a registered nurse?
The difference between a clinical nurse and a registered nurse has to do with the setting in which they work. A registered nurse can work either in a hospital setting (e.g., emergency room, ICU) or in a clinic setting (e.g., pediatrician, dermatologist).
Both clinic and hospital nursing positions require nurses to be trained in a relevant nursing program, whether becoming a licensed practical nurse (LPN) or earning an ASN, BSN, or MSN degree to become a registered nurse (RN).
Unlike RNs working in hospital settings, clinic nurses typically enjoy regular Monday through Friday hours with 9 to 5 work schedules. While there may be some variation depending on the clinic or role, generally speaking, a clinic nurse has a more traditional work schedule than a hospital nurse.
A clinic nurse's day-to-day schedule is also more predictable. Unlike hospital nurses, a clinic nurse usually has time to sit between patients and have a regularly scheduled lunch break.
