What is the difference between an EKG tech and a monitor tech?
The difference between an EKG tech and a monitor tech has to do with setting up equipment versus interpreting rhythms and patient interaction. There are also differences in training and certification credentials.
A monitor tech, on average, is certified in cardiovascular technology and has to take other advanced EKG courses besides the basic one. On the other hand, an EKG tech requires less training and interpretation. This is because, unlike an EKG tech, a monitor tech must understand how to interpret rhythms.
An EKG tech is responsible for recording an EKG. Interpretation of the EKG is not considered a part of the job. EKG techs are there to place leads and record an EKG, but the MD does the ultimate reading.
BEKG techs may notice a change in rhythm or a possible MI and can quickly alert the RN or MD. However, they are not trained on how to interpret rhythms.
An EKG tech tends to work more directly with patients than a monitor tech. This involves direct contact with the patient, knowledge of proper electrode placement (including variant placements), proper operation of the EKG machine, and correct procedure for patient ID verification and other record keeping.
Conversely, the monitor tech rarely interacts directly with the patient, as the RN or CNA is usually responsible for placing the equipment on the patient.
