This question is about what a nurse does.
The hierarchy of nursing includes being a certified nursing assistant, licensed practicing nurse, registered nurse, nurse manager, and advanced practice registered nurse.
Being a certified nursing assistant (CNA) is the entry-level step of the nursing hierarchy. A CNA is typically responsible for the daily activities of the patient, such as eating, bathing, and dressing. They also help monitor the patient's vitals regularly.
A candidate can become a CNA by completing a state training program and passing an exam. To become an LPN you must take a training program that typically takes about one year and complete a licensing exam.
The next step of the hierarchy is a registered nurse (RN). An RN is responsible for a larger range of patient care. They take medical histories, assess patient conditions, perform tests, and administer medications and treatments.
The work environment will determine many of the tasks you complete. A nursing home may be vastly different from working in a hospital. To become an RN you must earn either an associate's or bachelor's degree in nursing, and pass the required exams.
Nurse managers have the experience and education to include both managerial and clinical work in their position. They are typically seen as the nurse in charge of an entire unit. They are typically working directly with the staff above and below them to ensure the unit is running properly.
Advance-Level nursing positions include nurse practitioners, chief nursing officers, and directors of nursing. This level requires at least a master's degree if not more. Advanced nursing allows for more abilities, but also more responsibilities. For example, a nurse practitioner can prescribe medications, which is something no other level of nursing can do. There are various exams that can be taken to become an advanced practicing registered nurse (APRN).
