What is the hiring process at Caterpillar?

The hiring process at Caterpillar varies by position and usually takes several weeks from start to finish due to the drug testing and background checks that are required.

There are 3 basic steps to the hiring process at Caterpillar:

  1. Application: Prospective employees are encouraged to explore the Caterpillar careers webpage and get information on Caterpillar's business, culture, and available jobs.

    You are also invited to explore the "Do the Work that Matters" section (don't forget to watch the video) to find out more about what it is like working for Caterpillar.

    Once an opportunity of interest has been identified, prospects are encouraged to apply via the Caterpillar career page. You will be prompted to create an online profile via Workday if you don't already have one. Once you have signed up, you will be able to submit your application.

    After you have submitted your application, you will be able to update your profile, apply for jobs, and monitor your application status using the online portal.

    There may be pre-screening text messages or assessments that will be sent to you or you will be contacted by a member of the internal recruitment team regarding the next steps.

    Please note that a full COVID-19 vaccination may be a condition of employment depending on the role and location of the job. If you have concerns, please discuss this with a member of the internal recruitment team.

  2. Interview: After you submit your application, it will be reviewed by a member of the internal recruitment team. If your skills seem to be a match for the role, you will be contacted to set up a phone interview.

    During the phone interview, you will discuss the role in greater detail and get to ask any questions you have regarding the role and/or the company. If you are still interested and the recruitment team feels that you are a good fit, you will move on to the next interview.

    The next interview usually takes place with the hiring manager and at least one team member who is currently working in the role you have applied for or is at a similar level. This interview tends to involve a lot of scenario-based questions in order to gauge your personality and experiences in past roles.

    According to current and former employees, the interviewers are looking for your answers to follow the STAR format. The STAR format means:

    • Situation (S): Describe the situation that you were in or the task that you needed to accomplish. Keep the amount of detail appropriate and keep the focus on you. Use a specific event or situation, do not give a generalized description.

    • Task (T): What goal were you working toward? (Again be specific!)

    • Action (A): Describe the actions that you took to address the situation. What specific steps did YOU take and what was YOUR particular contribution?

    • Result (R): Describe the outcome and feel free to take credit for your accomplishments. Explain what happened, how the event ended, and what you learned.

    Make sure that all of your answers contain multiple positives.

    Sample interview questions include:

    • "Tell me about a time you had to adapt to change in a work environment."

    • "Describe a time you had trouble working with a group."

    • "Name 3 of your soft skills."

    • "Give me an example of a time when you had to use good judgment and logic to solve a problem."

  3. Offer and Onboarding: If you are selected for the role, a member of the internal recruitment team will contact you to review the offer letter details, benefits, and more information on your new career at Caterpillar. If you are not selected, you will receive communication from a member of the Caterpillar team.

    Once you have accepted an offer, you will be asked to complete forms and start the pre-onboarding process. You will also be required to submit for a drug test and background check. The internal recruitment team member will provide you with more detailed information on how to complete these steps.
