What is the role of a claims adjuster?

By Zippia Team - Mar. 3, 2022

The role of a claims adjuster is to determine a company's liability as it relates to a customer claim. There are many processes that claim adjusters employ in order to make this determination.

It is the role of the claims adjuster to investigate a customer's claim. These claims may be related to health, life, or auto insurance policies maintained by the customer. Adjusters investigate claims through interviews and inspection. They will talk to witnesses and examine the scene in which an incident has taken place.

Adjusters also research any prior claims made by customers as well as past claims that may act as a precedent. Once the validity of the claim is established, it is the role of the claims adjuster to negotiate a settlement.

These negotiations often involve communication with both the customer as well as company management. When both parties have agreed with an adjuster's findings, a settlement is reached.
