What is the role of a security specialist?

There are two different and distinctive security specialist fields, including physical security specialists and cyber security specialists. The main role of both fields is to develop strategies and solutions that provide preventative security, whether that be for people or cyber-related assets.

The role of physical security specialists involves implementing security equipment and services. This includes but is not limited to:

• The installation and use of security equipment

• Utilizing scanning equipment such as metal detectors or electronic surveillance tools

• Documenting visitors

• Conducting physical inspections

• Assesses risks while also providing solutions for improved safety

The role of cyber security specialists involves maintaining and providing security for the networks and data of companies or organizations. This generally comes down to the maintenance of automated security systems and supervising or training other employees or teammates on the best methods to limit data breaches.

Some roles include but are not limited to:

• Create and implement security audits

• Routinely make sure computers are up-to-date to passively prevent malware or software-related bugs

• Create and implement new firewalls and other security programs or methods to continuously prevent cyber insecurities

• Monitoring systems and networks for abnormalities
