What is the TESOL certification?
A Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) certification is a certification in education that proves that an individual has skills in teaching English as a foreign language and as a second language. The TESOL certification is administered by the TESOL international association.
To receive your TESOL certification, you must complete at least 120 hours of coursework as well as pass an exam. The coursework generally includes accelerated learning through a program that will cost from $200-600, depending on intensity. It generally takes about 3 months to complete. TESOL certification does not expire, so once you have it, it's for life.
TESOL certification is extremely important (and often required) if you plan on teaching English as a second language. If you want to teach English to people in different countries, this certification will be required. It can give you a leg-up with finding teaching positions, especially in areas where many students speak English as their second language.
