What is the UX hierarchy?

By Kate Swindlehurst - Mar. 13, 2023

The hierarchy of needs in user experience (UX) has functionality at the bottom, followed by the information above it, aesthetics above that, and usability on top. The bottom, functionality, is the most basic necessity for user experience. The interface needs to work and not break.

Above functionality, information is important in the UX hierarchy. Not only does the interface need to work, but it needs to have up-to-date information that needs to be accessible, readable, and correct.

Then, aesthetics come into play. The interface needs to look professional, complete, and unique. Finally, usability is at the top, which means the interface allows for tasks to be completed accurately and promptly.
