What is the venture capital hierarchy?
The venture capital hierarchy starts with analysts and includes associates, principles, and general partners. Larger firms may include positions like venture partners, but the basic hierarchy includes those four levels.
The lowest level of the venture capital hierarchy includes analysts. Analysts, including most junior members, are often at the beginning of their careers. They typically work with clients but do not make large business decisions.
Associates are above analysts, and they have more responsibility. They oversee analysts and make limited decisions for the business. They are still working with clients and often oversee larger projects. Typically, they are promoted after 2-3 years of working as analysts.
Some firms have positions as senior associates to then bridge the gap into being principles, but this is not always the case, and many associates jump directly to principles.
Principles are members of the investment team that are often seen as partners in training. They continue to make more decisions and have specific clients they are fully over.
General partners come next and are included in making large investment decisions. They also have principles reporting to them, and they oversee that work is completed correctly. Networking is essential for general partners to grow and find and keep clients.
