What is work-based learning?

By Roger Raber - Apr. 25, 2023

Work-based learning is the process of students completing meaningful tasks, either in the workplace or a work environment, to learn a skill. This is an effective learning model with several important benefits.

Learning a skill through hands-on experiences is a central component of the work-based training model. There are several different ways that this training may take place. Internships and cooperative education opportunities give students the experience of actually going into a workplace and contributing. Secondary schools and colleges often have relationships with businesses willing to take on students and provide training.

A more immersive type of work-based learning is an apprenticeship. This is typically a longer relationship extending over one or more years to groom an apprentice for a position with the sponsoring company.

School-based enterprises are another way of experiencing work-based learning. In this model, the school replicates a host of different industry environments, complete with meaningful tasks that result in production. Many community colleges and high school vocational schools offer these types of hands-on training programs, from cosmetology to welding and culinary arts.
