What is work-study employment?
Work-study employment is a federal program in which participating universities are able to provide employment to students who qualify based on their FAFSA (free application for federal student aid).
The federal work-study program is awarded based on need. Several different factors help determine your eligibility, including income, financial need, and prior year funding. The earlier you complete your FAFSA, the better your chances are of receiving an opportunity.
There are some schools that will match students with positions. However, most schools require you to seek out, apply, and interview for positions. Not all jobs are available on campus, and the financial aid office can help with obtaining a job. Work-study earnings are paid in the form of a paycheck. It is intended to help with day-to-day expenses. It does not apply directly to tuition.
An upside to work-study is they typically work around your class schedule. Hours, responsibilities, and wages can vary depending on experience, and state requirements. Another benefit is that your work-study earnings do not count against you on your FAFSA. Although you must report the earnings on the FAFSA, they don't count against your need basis.
