The qualifications needed for a health care assistant include a high school diploma and the willingness to learn. Health care assistance careers generally require a high school diploma and completion of a one-year certificate program or a two-year associate's degree in medical assistance. Programs are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES).
