What qualifications do you need for clinical research in nursing?
The qualifications you need for clinical research in nursing are typically a minimum of a bachelor's degree in nursing and research experience. However, it is beneficial for a person who wishes to advance in the clinical research field to gain a master's degree in nursing (MSN).
Typically a person who wants to become a clinical research nurse needs to have a bachelor's of science in nursing (BSN). While a person can become a resident nurse (RN) with only an associate's degree in nursing (ADN), it is much harder to jump to higher levels of the field without a BSN and, preferably, an MSN.
An additional year of education and training is generally required to become a clinical research nurse, especially for a nurse who only has an associate's or bachelor's degree. This is available in on-the-job programs in hospitals or from a post-degree research certificate program.
In addition to the aforementioned qualifications, to become a clinical research nurse, a person should have at least one of the following certifications for clinical research nurses: Clinical Research Association (CCRA) and the Clinical Research Coordinator (CCRC).
They are both offered by the Association of Clinical Research Professionals. These certifications are not specific to nurses but rather those that work in the research field.
To be deemed eligible for the CCRA or the CCRC Certification exam, applicants must attest to having earned 3,000 hours of professional experience performing the knowledge and tasks located in the six content areas of the CRA Detailed Content Outline.
