What qualifications do you need to be a carpenter?

By Zippia Team - Dec. 17, 2021

To be a carpenter, you need brains, brawn, and a high school diploma or equivalent. You do not need a college degree.

You will need basic industrial math skills, specific industry knowledge, and various soft skills. The best way to gain and develop these is by completing a carpentry apprenticeship under a licensed master carpenter.

Carpentry apprenticeships typically take three to five years to complete, are usually paid, and include classroom instruction and on-the-job training. During your apprenticeship, you will work under a licensed master carpenter. Common training courses cover:

  • basic industrial mathematics -- arithmetic, algebra, geometry, et al.

  • building and construction

  • reading blueprints

  • material classifications

  • green building

  • Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards

Carpenters need to be detail-oriented with strong written and verbal communication skills and personal discipline.
