This question is about personal trainer.

What qualifications do you need to become a personal trainer?

By Zippia Team - Dec. 17, 2021

To become a personal trainer, a person needs to complete a personal trainer program or degree and pass the certification test. It takes between three months to four years to become a certified personal trainer, depending on the program that a person chooses.

If a person has a goal to become a personal trainer, there are several options. The quickest is a certification. But a person can also choose to pursue a two-year associate's degree or even a four-year bachelor's degree.

A certification is less expensive and takes less time to complete, while a four-year degree may make a person eligible for higher positions. Some personal trainers even earn master's degrees to advance further in their careers.

Once an individual completes a program, whether at the certificate or degree level, they will still need to pass the test to become certified as a trainer.

There are several organizations you can become certified through; some reputable options include:

  • American Council on Exercise (ACE)

  • American Fitness Training of Athletics (AFTA)

  • American Fitness Professionals and Associates (AFPA)

  • International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA)

  • Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFFA)

  • National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA)

  • National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM)

Since many personal training schools prepare students for a specific certification, a personal training seeking certification will need to carefully research program choices to ensure they are preparing for a certification that meets their goals.
