What should I study to become a midwife?
You should study coursework resulting in an MSN degree to become a midwife. Nurse midwives must earn several degrees to practice midwifery. These degrees focus on patient care, math, and science coursework.
Becoming a nurse midwife is long and challenging, taking approximately six to eight years to complete. Candidates must first earn a BSN before taking the NCLEX exam. With their four-year degree and successful completion of the NCLEX exam, midwife candidates can begin to work in the nursing field and gain experience.
After working as a nurse for one to two years, you can apply to midwife degree programs.
Midwife programs are typically two to three years in length and will result in graduates earning their MSN. There are midwife graduate programs nationwide, with several of the best programs at Vanderbilt and the University of Michigan.
Graduates of a midwife MSN degree should next seek certification through the American Midwifery Certification Board. Once their certification has been obtained, it must be renewed every five years. With certification through the AMCB, midwives final step is to obtain APRN licensure in the state that they plan to practice.
