What should I study to become a programmer?

By Roger Raber - Jun. 13, 2023

You should study one of several relevant majors, from information technology to computer engineering, to become a programmer. While it is important to obtain some level of computer-related education, a degree is not always a requirement.

Approximately 60% of programmers hold a bachelor's degree. Of those, 36% majored in computer science. Degrees in business, math, or any computer-related field can also serve as a base to enter programming. However, nearly 20% of programmers have an associate's degree or less.

These individuals have taken coursework designed to focus solely on aspects of programming. Programming languages and web development skills are featured in two-year programs and programming boot camps. JavaScript and Python are often the focus of these courses and can be taken in-person or online.
