What should I study to become a social worker?
You should study social work in order to become a social worker. It is not always a requirement that aspiring social workers major in social work, but it is strongly recommended.
A bachelor's degree in social work will provide you with some opportunities within the field, albeit limited. To be a licensed social worker, you must hold a master's degree in social work from an accredited program.
It is possible to hold a bachelor's degree in a subject other than social work and be accepted into a master's program, but often enrollment preference is given to those with a BA or BS in social work.
The Council on Social Work Education is the accrediting body overseeing those master's degree programs deemed legitimate by many states. Licensure standards in states typically require a degree from an accredited college or university and a combination of supervised experience hours within a certain time span.
An example would be that you must have 3,600 hours of supervised experience within a 24-month time span.
