To become a physician assistant, you need to major in a healthcare or health science field. Candidates for physician assistants need to major in healthcare or a health-related science field. This will give you a foundation in anatomy, physiology, and some of the basic sciences needed to pursue a career as a PA (physician assistant). Often candidates major in biology, kinesiology, or health science. However, there are several other options.

Once the bachelor's degree is completed, you must then pursue a master's degree in a PA program. It is important to ensure that the program is accredited. In the program, you complete two years of study. Typically, you specialize in an area such as:

  • Clinical medicine

  • Emergency medicine

  • Human anatomy and physiology

  • Medical ethics

  • Pathology

  • Pharmacology

  • Physical diagnosis

Once you have completed your education, you will become certified, and licensed, and be required to maintain your license.
