What to say when accepting a job offer

By Justin Parker - Mar. 13, 2023

There are several different things you should say when accepting a job offer. Here are the areas you should cover during the conversation:

  • Express gratitude to the employer

Once on the phone call or video conference, make sure you thank the employer for the offer. You should seek to display respect and professionalism at this moment. Express your gratitude for being offered this opportunity and let the employer know how excited you are to start the new job.

  • Confirm all the details

It is very important to confirm all of the job details when accepting your job offer. Critical details include:

  • The start date

  • The salary for the position

  • The employee benefits that come with the role

If there is anything you are uncertain about, ask for further clarification on the issue. Also, if jotted down any notes or questions during your research about the company, now is the appropriate time to address those items.

  • Explicitly accept the offer

If you are satisfied with all of the specific details about the job offer, you can then accept it. You should also reiterate your excitement for the role and the new journey in your career.

  • Ask about next steps

It is also important to ask the employer about the next steps in the process. Some companies have very specific onboarding processes, these usually include things like signing a formal offer letter, filling out paperwork, completing a background check, and attending new employee orientations.

  • Follow-up

Be professional and follow up after your acceptance with a thank you note or email. You should express your appreciation and excitement for starting the position.
