What's the difference between customer service representative and customer service specialist?

By Kate Swindlehurst - Jun. 13, 2023

The difference between customer service representatives and customer service specialists is that customer service representatives are responsible for handling general inquiries and issues, while specialists work to resolve specific concerns and challenges for customers.

Customer service representatives are typically the first point of contact a customer has with a company. They can help answer basic questions that a customer may have. This could be issued with placing an order or answering questions about a restocking of a product.

For specific questions about orders, or issues with a service, customer service representatives connect customers with specialists. Then, specialists can give their more specialized advice to help customers. Often, specialists are given more authority in specific areas than representatives have so that they can help sort out these issues.
