When should you stay home from work

By Justin Parker - May. 17, 2023

You should stay home from work for several reasons, including if you are sick with a contagious illness, or you are having a personal or family emergency that must be attended to immediately.

Here are some common physical symptoms that might indicate that you have a contagious illness and you need to stay home from work:

  • Fever

  • Sore throat

  • Cough

  • Vomiting or diarrhea

You might also consider staying home from work if you know you were exposed to someone that has an infectious illness. This is a common courtesy to your coworkers. You can also make contact with your manager or supervisor to get their input on the situation, if necessary.

Another scenario where you should stay home from work is when you have been instructed to do so by a licensed doctor or medical professional. They will normally give you some medical documentation in order for you to provide to your employer, so your employer knows you are taking a day off on the instruction of a medical professional.

Employers normally have an allotted amount of sick days they give their employees. This type of time off might be paid or unpaid, and can also have varying amounts per worker depending on the company.
