Medical assistants work in physicians' offices, outpatient care centers, and hospitals. In physician's offices, medical assistants work amongst doctors, nurses, and patients. Here they tend to have a lot of interactions with patients, as they often deal with clerical work, such as scheduling and checking in patients.

Outpatient care centers have many of the same elements as a physician's office. Medical assistants work alongside nurses and doctors and handle clerical work pertinent to the patients.

Hospitals can also resemble the former two work environments for medical assistants; however, sometimes, in a hospital setting, medical assistants don't have as much exposure to patients. This can be because certain medical assistants in hospitals have a stronger focus on paperwork and medical databases than on interacting with patients.
