Pediatric hospitalists are pediatricians who work primarily in hospitals. They care for children in many hospital areas, including the pediatric ward, labor and delivery, the newborn nursery, the emergency department, the neonatal intensive care unit, and the pediatric intensive care unit.

12% of pediatricians work in office-based multi-specialty practices. A multi-specialty clinic is one in which doctors share facilities, administration, income and expenses, support staff, and equipment. Doctors can specialize in related medical practices or provide a wide range of specialties.

9% work in outpatient hospitals or in a special area set up for children to have clinic appointments.
