Who gets paid more: CEO or CFO?

By Zippia Team - Dec. 17, 2021

Chief executive officers (CEOs) typically get paid more in base pay than chief financial officers (CFOs), with CFO compensation largely based on variable pay. CEO and CFO salaries vary greatly, depending on organization location, size, and industry.

Independent financial services company BDO International conducted a 2019 study of 600 publicly held middle-market companies and reported average annual chief financial officer base pay was around 40% of chief executive officer pay in the United States.

Though their base pay is typically lower, CFOs are receiving greater annual pay raises and variable pay.
