Who owns AT&T?

By Zippia Team - Jul. 28, 2022

AT&T owns AT&T, while Bell Telephone Company and Bell System are considered parent organizations of AT&T.

ATT was founded by Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Watson, and Gardiner Greene Hubbarb, after Bell invented the telephone in 1875. By 1881, Bell Telephone Company had become the American Bell Telephone Company.

One of its subsidiaries was the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (ATT), established in 1885. On December 30, 1899, ATT acquired the assets of its parent American Bell Telephone, becoming the new parent company.

Up until 1982, the company held a monopoly on phone services in the United States. This was broken up by regulators that required ATT to divest its local subsidiaries, which it then did by grouping them into seven individual companies.

Today, ATT is a multinational telecommunications company that is registered in Delaware, but headquartered in Dallas, Texas. In 2020, the company was ranked 9th on the Fortune 500 list and had an annual revenue of $181 billion. ATT has over 200,000 employees working for it.
