Autozone was founded in the 1970s under the original name of Auto Shack, by Memphis-based wholesale grocer Malone Hyde. After the sale of the grocery operation to the Fleming Companies of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the name of the company was changed to AutoZone to reflect the new focus.

In 1991 the company began trading on the New York Stock Exchange. The late 90s saw the explosion of the retail auto part company's stores taking hold all over the United States. By 2017 AutoZone became the largest retailer of auto parts in the United States and Canada.

AutoZone is now headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee with an annual revenue of $12.6 billion in 2020, and a workforce of 87,000 employees.
