Who owns Bloomingdales?

By Zippia Team - Jul. 28, 2022

Macy's Inc. and Bloomingdales, Retail, Inc. own Bloomingdales. Bloomingdales is an American high-end department store founded in New York City in 1861 by Joseph B. and Lyman G. Bloomingdale.

Another brother of both Joseph and Lyman, Emanuel Watson Bloomingdale, was also involved in the business. It became a division of the Cincinnati-based Federated Department Stores in 1930 under then-president Samuel Bloomingdale. The Macy's department store chain joined the Federated Department Stores holding company in 1994. And in 2007, Federated Department Stores was renamed and called Macy's, Inc.

During the retail market boom of the 1980s, Bloomingdales opened many stores across the country. The company continued its expansion at a high rate until 2009 when E-commerce started to have an adverse effect on brick-and-mortar retailers.

Today, Bloomingdales only has 55 store locations across the United States. However, the estimated annual revenue of the company remains high at $1.072 billion per year.
