Warner Brothers Discovery owns Discovery. Discovery is a publicly traded company with David Zaslav as its CEO. John Hendricks founded the Discovery Channel and its original parent company, Cable Educational Network Inc. in 1982.

BBC, Allen Company, and Venture America, were among its earliest investors. Raising $5 million in start-up funding to launch the network. The Discovery Channel started broadcasting on June 17, 1985. The early years saw the channel focusing on educational programming with cultural and wildlife documentaries. In addition, it also broadcasted science and history specials.

In the early 2000s, the Discovery Channel shifted its focus in an attempt to reach a broader audience. This was done by developing more reality-based series, such as ones focusing on automobiles and occupations.

Today, the Discovery Channel is the third most widely distributed subscription channel in the United States. In 2018, it was available to an estimated 88,598,000 pay television households in the country.
