Who owns Google?

By Zippia Team - Aug. 22, 2022

Alphabet Inc. owns Google. In 2015, Google was reorganized and became a wholly owned subsidiary of Alphabet Inc.. Google is Alphabet Inc.'s biggest subsidiary and is also a holding company for Alphabet Inc.'s internet properties and interests.

Google was founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin when it started as a research project for the two students attending Stanford University. They originally named the search engine BackRub but eventually changed the name to Google, a play on the word googol, a very large number. This new name was picked to reflect the search engines' intent to provide large quantities of information.

Google registered its domain name in 1997, and the company was incorporated in 1998. Google received funding from two angel investors in 1998: Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos and entrepreneur Ram Shriram. Google initially raised around $1 million; this allowed them to open up its original location in Menlo Park, California.

In 2000, Google became the default search engine replacing Yahoo!, one of the most popular sites at the time. Currently, Google plays a role in many other areas of technology and is not strictly an internet search engine. It focuses on artificial intelligence, online advertising, cloud computing, computer software, quantum computing, e-commerce, and consumer electronics.

Google is one of the Big Five American information technology companies, that include Amazon, Apple, Meta, and Microsoft.
