In 1876, John Kellogg and his brother Will John Kellogg developed the first corn flakes while at the Battle Creek Sanitarium, which eventually led to the formation of the Kellogg Company. The Kellogg family worked together to produce the original corn flake, which they believed was beneficial in the recovery of their patients at Battle Creek Sanitarium.

The corn flakes were a big hit among patients who would send in mail order requests to the Kellogg family long after being released from the sanitarium.

After some disagreement over whether to market corn flakes to the public, the Kellogg brothers split up, and Will. left the sanitarium and created the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company in 1906.

He convinced his brother to relinquish rights to the product, and then Will renamed the company Kellogg Toasted Corn Flake Company in 1909 and later just the Kellogg Company in 1922.

In 1930, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation was founded, and Kellogg donated more than $66 million in Kelloff Company stock and other investments that would equal $1.02 billion today.

In 1952, Kellogg went public. It has traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol K since 1959. The Kellogg Foundation has continued to remain the primary stockholder in Kellogg to this day.
