Who owns PetSmart?

By Zippia Team - Aug. 22, 2022

BC Partners and Argos Holdings Inc. own PetSmart. PetSmart is a privately held American chain of pet stores that sells pet products and pet services. Jim and Janice Dougherty created the concept of discount pet-food warehouses in 1987 when they opened two under the name PetFood Warehouse.

In 1989, PetFood Warehouse was not yet profitable, so investors removed the Doughertys from the control of the company and hired Samuel J. Parker as president and CEO in their place. That same year Parker changed the company's name to PetSmart and began to expand its products and services.

In 1993, the company went public on the NASDAQ. After many years of growth and expansion, activist investors called for a buy of the company in 2014 because of stiff competition from online pet retailers. After a bidding war, a group of private equity investors led by BC Partners completed a leveraged buyout of PetSmart for $8.7 billion.
