This question is about Pixar Animation Studios.
The Walt Disney Company and Walt Disney Studios own Pixar and are considered its parent organizations. Pixar got its start in 1974 as the Computer Graphics Lab, with its founding members Edwin Catmull, Malcolm Blanchard, Alvy Ray Smith, and David DiFrancesco.
George Lucas' company Lucasfilm absorbed the Computer Graphics Lab in 1979 to help develop special effects in its Industrial Lights and Magic division. John Lasseter was hired by Lucasfilm in 1983, and years later would go on to become Pixar's chief creative officer.
In 1986, Pixar became an independent company, and Steve Jobs made an offer to buy it, which George Lucas found too low at first but eventually accepted. Soon after, Walt Disney Studios was interested and eventually bought and utilized the Pixar Image Computer and custom software.
Then in 1991, Pixar made a historic $26 million deal with Disney to produce three computer-animated feature films, the first of which being Toy Story. Disney and Pixar continued to collaborate until 2006 when Disney purchased Pixar for $7.4 billion in an all-stock deal.
