Who owns Sega?

Sega was founded by American businessmen Martin Bromley and Richard Stewart in June 1960. Shortly after its founding, the company acquired the assets of its predecessor, Service Games of Japan. Five years later, the company was rebranded as Sega Enterprises, Ltd.

Sega developed its first coin-operated game Periscope in 1966. Following a downturn in the arcade business in the early 1980s, Sega began to develop video game consoles starting with the SG-1000 and Master System; however, they struggled against competitors like Nintendo.

In 1988, Sega released its next console, the Sega Genesis. The Genesis struggled against the competition in Japan but found huge success overseas after the release of Sonic the Hedgehog in 1991. After struggling with future console concepts, Sega stopped manufacturing consoles and became a third-party developer in 2001.

In the years since Sega has become more profitable and Sega Holdings Co. Ltd. was established in 2015. Sega has produced several multi-million-selling game franchises, including Total War and Yakuza.

In 2021, Sega Sammy generated 277.7 billion Japanese yen in net sales revenue. The company's revenue segments include entertainment content, pachislot and pachinko machines, and others. Samsung Sammy employs approximately 7,000 people.
