Who owns Square?

The original inspiration for Square occurred to Jack Dorsey and Jim McKelvey in 2009 when McKelvey was unable to complete a $2,000 sale of his glass faucets and fittings because he could not accept credit cards. The name "Square" derives from the company's square-shaped card readers.

The goal of Square was to create a point-of-sale technology that would group merchant services and mobile payments into one simple, smooth, and modern service. After seven rounds of private funding, Square went public in 2015 under the ticker SQ on the New York Stock Exchange.

Currently, businesses in eight countries can use Square's Technology and its point-of-sale systems can accept 130 internationally accepted currencies. In December 2021, Square announced that it would change its name to Block, Inc; however, on December 16, less than one week into the rebrand, HR Block sued the company for trademark infringement.

In 2021, the annual revenue for Square was reported to be $17.66 billion and they have approximately 8,500 employees.
