Richard and Elizabeth Uihlein and the Uihlein family own Uline.
Uline is a privately held American company that offers shipping and other business supplies. The company is headquartered in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin. The headquarters is located on 200 acres and consists of a 279,000 square foot facility and a newer building of approximately the same size.
The company was founded by Richard and Elizabeth Uihlein in 1980 after inheriting money from the Schlitz beer fortune. The Uihlein's recognized a local need for a shipping supply distributor and started Uline from their basement.
The company's first product was the H-101 carton size, and its success enabled the Uihleins to move into a new headquarters in Waukegan, Illinois. Over the 1980s and 1990s, Uline expanded and opened operations in Minnesota, California, and New Jersey. Uline sold over 4,000 products.
In 2000, Uline expanded operations to Mexico and Canada and opened additional distribution centers in Illinois, Texas, Georgia, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania. The Uline catalog continued to grow, offering over 17,000 products.
Uline has been set up as a passthrough corporation, with Elizabeth Uihlein serving as president and chief executive officer. Richard is the chairman of the board of directors, and their children are company executives. Richard's brother Steve also serves as vice president.
In February 2020, Uline was reported to have over $5.8 billion in revenue and over 6,700 employees.
