Walgreens was founded in 1901 in Chicago, Illinois, by Charles R. Walgreen. By 1913, Walgreens had four locations on Chicago's south side. By 1919, there were 20 stores in the chain. In the 1920s, Walgreens' popularity boomed as a result of alcohol prohibition. While alcohol was illegal, prescription whiskey was available and sold by Walgreens.
By 1934, Walgreens was operating in 30 states and had over 600 stores. The family continued to operate the business and expand into larger-sized Walgreens superstores throughout the 1900s. As of 2020, Walgreens operates approximately 9.000 drug stores in all 50 states as well as the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.
As of 2022, Walgreens Boots Alliance was ranked #18 on the Fortune 500 list of the largest corporations in the United States by total revenue. In the fiscal year 2020, the company saw sales of $139.5 billion, up 2.5% from the fiscal year 2019.
