This question is about what a veterinary technician does.
Why I quit being a veterinary technician comes down to several major factors, the pay, long hours, risk of injury, limited opportunities for job advancement, the nature of the work, and having to see animals suffer.
Most people who decide to become veterinary technicians love animals and wish to help. But it is also for this very reason that many veterinary technicians burn out.
On one hand, you get paid to do something you love, which is never a bad thing. The median pay in 2020 for a veterinary assistant was $14.39 per hour. The median annual wage is $29,930, according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics.
For this amount of pay, you are expected to work more than 40 hours a week. Many clinics are open on Saturdays, and emergency clinics may be staffed around the clock. Even in a clinic that keeps more traditional hours, there are often occasions when they are understaffed, resulting in mandatory overtime work.
The clinic can be a stressful work environment. Dealing with upset owners, aggressive or uncooperative animals, euthanasia, and seeing severe injuries caused by trauma or neglect can be intense. Stress is a key factor to why I left the veterinary tech field.
There is also emotional stress. Working as a veterinary tech is a job that, emotionally, will take a toll on every worker. It can be upsetting to watch a helpless animal in pain. And as a vet tech, you are likely to have to euthanize.
It is also possible to get injured by the animals you are working with, in the event they become distressed. You must remain vigilant to avoid bites or kicks, and take extreme care to properly handle and restrain animals at all times
