Job Description
The Surveyor I will primarily work under and report to a Survey Crew Chief and perform typical surveys in the field including topographic, boundary and construction surveys on various civil engineering projects including highway and urban roadway projects. Ideally the Surveyor I can work independently in the field on less complicated projects with direction from his/her supervisor or crew chief. A Surveyor I should also be capable of assisting design teams by using or be trained to use various CADD applications such as AutoCAD or Microstation when survey workloads fluctuate.
Essential Tasks and Duties:
Work with a Survey Crew Chief or Land Surveyor while performing land surveying services including plane and/or geodetic surveys for construction, topographic, right-of-way, and control survey projects.
Gathers field survey data through the use of conventional surveying and GPS methods.
Prepares accurate field notes, drawings and records change in conditions while in the field.
May be required to assist with construction observation duties on civil engineering projects.
May be asked to secure their UAS Part 107 License to operate a drone / UAS aircraft.
Learn and follow surveying methods and standards as required by state and public agencies.
Participates in pre-survey planning meetings with project managers and engineers on a consistent basis by providing updates and progress during all phases of projects.
This position may lead to a more prominent role as a Survey Crew Chief which will include becoming responsible for other survey personnel on a project and reporting to project managers and engineers.
This position will require the initiative to think independently and make rational judgment calls.
Effectively communicate with contractors, engineering staff and project owner representatives in the field.

Qualification Requirements:
High School diploma or equivalent is required.
A 2-year Associates Degree in Engineering Technology or Land Surveying is highly desirable (applicable experience may be acceptable in lieu of an Associate's Degree).
1 or more years of experience performing topographic and highway/roadway construction staking.
Candidate should expect to achieve their Certified Survey Technician ( CST) Level I and II Field Track.
Capable or familiar with operating GPS, robotic and total station survey equipment.
Familiar with survey data collection and construction survey methods.
Experience with CADD programs such as AutoCAD/Civil-3D or Microstation/GeoPak software is considered a plus.
Perform simple surveying calculations using engineering calculator, laptop computer, and coordinate geometry software.
Knowledge of Microsoft Windows/Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint) required.

The location of this position is flexible and can be performed from any of our Apex offices or remotely within 100 miles of any Apex office location. Key responsibilities will include environmental field studies, assisting in authoring NEPA environmental documents, and preparing federal, state and local permits. The field studies will include wetland delineations, avian studies, wildlife surveys, and tree/shrub surveys. This position will require travel to project locations and working outdoors where you may be exposed to changing weather conditions (rain, snow, sun, wind, etc.).
Qualification Requirements:
A Bachelor's degree in planning, natural resource management, environmental science, biological science, ecology or related field.
2+ years of environmental planning and permitting experience.
Experience with appropriate supplementary wetland training, ordinary high-water determinations, biological assessments, regional assessment methods required.
Experience with transportation projects and public agencies located in North Dakota and Minnesota is preferred.
Proficient using Microsoft Windows/Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
Experience with GPS and GIS software preferred.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.

Write field aquatic resource/wetland delineation reports for submittal to the USACE for jurisdictional determinations.
Complete evaluations for general wildlife species and listed federal and state species of concern, as well as assess potential effects to species and habitat due to project related impacts.
Assist in the development of reports, documents, and permits.
Willing to learn and operate Trimble GPS equipment for field studies and delineations.
Effective communication skills with the public will be required in settings such as public meetings, informational meetings, construction notifications, etc.
This position will require the initiative to think independently and make rational judgment calls.
Understand and follow company employee handbook and mandated safety policies.
Perform responsibilities in a conscientious, legal, and ethical manner with a strong attention to detail.
Must be able to work independently and in a team environment.
Participate in professional organizations and community leadership programs.
Travel and out of town stays may be required; may work overtime especially during deadlines for submittals.
