API Technologies company history timeline

2000

In 2000, Salesforce released what many consider the first modern API. Around the same time, eBay and Amazon developed APIs that allowed developers access.

Another important event occurred around this time — in 2000, computer scientist Roy Fielding published this dissertation, which introduced the concept of "REST," a software architectural style.

2002

After the evolution of ESB from Roy W. Schulte and David Chappell’as ideas in 2002, various private and public projects and organizations began adopting the technology.

2003

del.icio.us is a social bookmarking service for storing, sharing and discovering web bookmarks to web pages, that was founded by Jousha Schachter in 2003.

2004

In 2004, Flickr launched as a place to store and organize digital photos online.

2005

In July 2005, John Musser started ProgrammableWeb.

2006

In March, 2006 Amazon launched a new web service, something completely different from the Amazon bookseller and e-commerce site we've come to know.

2007

In 2007, Facebook launched its Facebook Platform, which encouraged developers to use the company's vast social data and build new applications and solutions.

2009

In March 2009 Foursquare launched at the SXSW interactive festival in Austin, TX.

2010

On October 6, 2010 Instagram launched its photo-sharing iPhone application.

2011

One of the first mentions of a microservice was during a workshop of software architects in May 2011 near Venice, Italy.

By 2011 the bar for delivering APIs, via HTTP, has been well established by early pioneers like SalesForce and Amazon, but Twilio has shown how mature the business of APIs has become with its evolution into the mobile period.

2016

Even with SalesForce being the first mover in the world of web APIs, they are still a powerhouse in 2016.

2018

In November 2018, the GraphQL project was moved from Facebook to the GraphQL Foundation hosted by the Linux Foundation.

In 2018, the first comprehensive law addressing the new frontier of use and sharing of personal information was passed: the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). To me, this European law represented a change in attitude about global connectedness.
