Responsible for the enforcement of all California State laws and University policies. Provide crime prevention by safeguarding University and personal property through motorized and foot patrol of assigned areas. Obtain evidence, apprehend violators, perform arrests and appear in courts as a witness. Enforce all posted University speed regulations using police radio patrol cars, respond to all radio calls or disturbances, assist in transporting the ill and injured as required. Investigate and make appropriate reports on accidents, property damage, fires, law violations and disturbances of the peace occurring on campus.
FLSA: Non-Exempt (Eligible for overtime compensation)
Anticipated Hiring Range: $7,705 per month - $9,047 per month, commensurate with the candidate's experience.

Time Base: Full-Time
Work Hours: Varies; irregular shifts, to include evenings, nights, weekends and holidays. Must be able to work any shift in a 24/7 schedule.

Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
• Valid California driver's license.
• Working knowledge of current law enforcement methods and procedures.
• Working knowledge of current criminal codes and laws.

Continually seek ways to improve and advance UTAPS field technology platforms. As new technology becomes available, incorporate improvements to platforms that operate in UTAPS.

Minimum Qualifications
Entry to the first level within this classification requires high school level reading, writing and mathematical abilities and possession of a California Driver's License. The nature of the duties may also require successful completion of a background check. Knowledge of and/or the ability to learn how to use applicable parking-related equipment and automated systems is essential. High school diploma or equivalent plus three to six months related experience would normally achieve these entry qualifications.

The services to be performed require the ability to tactfully deal with inmates, a keen sense of perception, mental alertness, and the ability to resolve crisis situations. Position Summary
The Cadet is a non-sworn officer in a trainee capacity. Incumbents attend a Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certified academy to develop the minimum qualifications necessary to assume a position as a sworn police officer. Upon successful completion of the required P.O.S.T. training within the required time frame and the discretion of management, the Police Officer Cadet may be appointed to the classification of Police Officer (Class Code 8350) on a probationary basis.
The primary responsibility of the Cadet is to attend the prescribed training sessions to learn the principles, practices and theory of criminal and civil law enforcement and codified and case law. The cadet also receives training in report writing, physical fitness techniques, firearms use and maintenance, and arrest and control techniques. Under close supervision, the Cadet may assist other police officers in the performance of their duties.
Appointments to this classification are temporary in nature and typically do not exceed seven (7) months.

PURPOSE:
Under the general supervision of Associate Vice President for Public Safety/Chief of Police, and with daily oversight by the Police Commander, the Police Officer routinely works an assigned shift and performs patrol duties on foot, bicycle or by vehicle to protect students, faculty, staff, campus visitors, property, and facilities against accidents, bodily harm, fire, theft, vandalism and illegal entry; enforces laws and traffic regulations; apprehends violators; provides general information and assistance to the public, conducts investigations, and is responsible for the protection of life and property within the jurisdiction of the California State University, Monterey Bay.

PURPOSE:
Under the general supervision of the Associate Vice President for Public Safety/Chief of Police, the Cadet under close supervision, routinely works an assigned shift and attends a certified academy. The Cadet is provided guidance in preparation for attending the police academy. During the preparation period, cadets may assist with patrol duties under direct supervision of an assigned supervisor on foot, bicycle or by vehicle to protect students, faculty, staff, campus visitors, property, and facilities against accidents, bodily harm, fire, theft, vandalism and illegal entry; provides general information and assistance to the public at California State University, Monterey Bay.
The Cadet is a non-sworn officer in a trainee capacity. Incumbents attend a Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certified academy to develop the minimum qualifications necessary to assume a position as a sworn police officer. Appointments to this classification are temporary in nature and typically do not exceed more than nine (9) months. Upon successful completion of the police academy, the recruit will be sworn in as a Police Officer of the University Police Department.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
Attends the prescribed training sessions to learn the principles, practices, and theory of criminal and civil law enforcement and codified and case law; and receives training in report writing, physical fitness techniques, firearms use and maintenance, and arrest and control techniques.
Under close supervision, the Cadet may assist police officers and police department personnel in the performance of their duties.
May perform crime prevention assignments, assist during enforcement of laws, traffic and safety regulations under direct supervision of an officer on the campus and adjacent areas.
May assist in an investigation of criminal activity and be provided with exposure to police report preparation.
Assists in providing security for large gatherings of faculty, staff, students or visitors to the campus; may assist in connecting individuals with the appropriate authorities for guidance and assistance.
Performs other duties; which enhance the safety of the campus community, such as providing assistance to Public Safety/Police support staff.
Participates in emergency preparedness and other safety programs as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

The USC Department of Public Safety (DPS) is one of the largest campus public safety departments in the United States and employs over 300 full time personnel. JOB SUMMARY:
In this important role, you will support the general safety of the university community by performing assigned patrol duties. You will secure the interior and exterior openings of facilities, monitor electronic door access and closed-circuit television systems, assist with investigations, and perform perimeter and parking lot security functions. This is an unarmed position working under direct supervision of a Community Service Officer II or a Sergeant.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Patrols an assigned area. Performs prescribed security checks of buildings, offices, and grounds to prevent loss of university assets. Observes and reports suspicious activity or persons, and security and/or safety hazards. Conducts investigations of losses in accordance with procedures and directions.
Opens and/or secures building and rooms according to procedures or as directed. Operates and/or monitors electronic door access, closed circuit television systems, and other security related devices. Dispatches or coordinates responses to situations as a result of observations made on CCTV and electronic door access. Assists with access at locations with malfunctioning electronic door access systems.
Maintains logs and records required to indicate duty times, occurrences, actions taken, observations made, and other relevant information. Prepares and submits reports as required.
Implements department procedures governing apprehensions, interrogations, and disposition of cases.
Assists with parking control and vehicle/pedestrian security. Directs traffic and gives directions.
Assists in maintaining perimeter and crowd control in areas of crimes, emergencies, and special activities.
Escorts university and hospital employees, students, and/or hospital patients between facilities and their vehicles.
Assists in crime prevention and public information programs.
Implements and enforces OSHA, CAL-OSHA, and university policies relating to safety, health, and fire prevention.
Serves as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) and mandatory reporter under the Clery Act based on university responsibilities. Has responsibility and is required to receive reports of crimes or criminal incidents from victims of crimes and/or third parties; notifies Department of Public Safety immediately of any reported serious crime or criminal incidents that indicates the presence of an ongoing threat to the university community; and notifies the Clery Compliance Coordinator in the Department of Public Safety.
