Los Angeles California location-exposure to ports and logistics services
There were many drawbacks to working here. Diversity Equity and Inclusion are nonexistent in upper managment. Most employees are former military--which unfortunately means the issues in the military are transferred to the workplace-bullying, undermining, and the men's club mentality. If you have a degree-get ready for the collusion--there is palpable resentment for "college educated". They will keep you away from career progression--often with management help. Many have no corporate business career skills and APM/Maersk profits hadsomely ( incentives) from hiring former military personnel. Management hires many HI-B visas workers as well, who break corporate norms for professional boundaries. Nepotism is rampant. Once you work here you realize why this industry is a dirty business and wonder why they've gone under the radar of regulation for so long. Training is inconsistent or poor, you will rely on job shadowing and again coworkers to "teach" you- may withhold or purposely give you limited/erroneous information. If you are a professional, female, person of color or LGBTQIA--you can expect onboarding to be extensively more difficult for you. Ultimately, these issues are the product of leadership ( or lack thereof) on terminal. You are not working for MAERSK, who has failed in tranferring their corporate values to APM terminals.
Experience and exposure the Maritime Industry.
In APM Los Angeles--not much. Perhaps their ability to pose for feel good posts on X or Instagram despite the realities you see daily on terminal and functional departments.
Get rid of the Nepotism, which means getting rid of Managers in Operations, Projects, and leadership
I used my internships at the Port, degree knowledge and researched Maersk's company profile.
Below industry average.
Women are routinely passed up for promotions. Upper management is most certainly Danish, White, European and male. Priority to HI-B visas over local wokers for higher salary positions.
Organizing and executing operational plans for the day in a teamwork environment that is supportive (not always).
