In 1913, Walter Baldwin Farmer with his wife, Gertrude, and their two daughters, moved from Brookline, Massachusetts, and purchased the farm.
Their Idared apple dates to 1942, developed in Idaho as a cross between the Jonathan and Wagener.
In 1967 Joe’s son Richard took over and began developing the retail facilities at the farm.
Bill Wagner died in 1984, and shortly thereafter Jean became president of the business.
The former markets were each known as the Applemart until they closed in 2004.
After a series of owners worked the farm, Joan and Steve Belkin bought it in 2005.
In 2005, the owners of the farm were Ben and Peter Wagner, the sons of Jean and Bill.
In 2006, Peter Wagner purchased the farm and became the sole owner of Applecrest.
Around 2010, Leslie Cummins and Tim Seabrook of 5 Star Nursery in nearby Brooklin replanted his orchard around a 200-year-old pear tree still standing.
The new building is expected to be completed by October 2014, Peter Wagner said.
As of 2014, Applecrest is only 124 acres (0.50 km) in size, a fraction of its former expanse.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2014.
