Applied Materials' Display Controls Department is searching for an intern to join our team in summer 2026! The department is responsible for hardware design and improvements for PCBs.
2026 Summer internship program start/end dates:
Tuesday, May 26 - Friday, August 14
Monday, June 8 - Friday, August 28
Monday, June 15 - Friday, September 4
Responsibilities will entail the following:
* Assist will electronic and system documentation
* Assist in soldering and un-soldering components on PCBs
* Learn schematic capture and fundamentals of PCB design
* Analyze problems along with more Senior Engineers
* Organize and maintain our Electronics lab
* Use test equipment to gather important data
* Design and test various circuits
Requirements:
* Student must be pursuing a Bachelor's (or Master's) degree program in Electrical Engineering, computer sciences, Physics, or a related field
* Student must be in good academic standing at their university, with a GPA of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale
* Experience in semiconductor processing or manufacturing preferred
* Desire to learn

Compensation:
$31 - $41 per hour

The salary offered to a selected candidate will be based on multiple factors including location, hire grade, job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and with consideration of internal equity of our current team members. KLA has a wide range of Electrical Engineering opportunities, from PCB design to system design:
A) The PCB design candidate will produce PCB designs, schematics, and work closely with layout engineers to fabricate printed circuit boards.
B) Familiarity with common electronic blocks such as power supply regulators, isolators, op-amps, ADCs/DACs is desired. Desired qualifications include experience with OrCAD PCB, Altium, PADS, or Eagle; ADS, Hyperlynx simulation experience is a plus.
C) The candidate will work closely with FPGA and firmware engineers to characterize and test full PCB systems.
D) The system design candidate will produce electrical system designs, and work closely with mechanical engineers to ensure everything meets the requirements and is easily serviceable.
E) Design includes power distribution, interconnection diagrams, safety interlocks and supporting hardware, computers, data storage, wired or fiber optic networking, and cabling to connect it all together.
D) Familiarity with AC power distribution is desired. Other useful skills includes experience with programmable logic controllers, cable and fiber optic design, ladder logic, or soldering.

Job Description
Western Digital Media Test Engineering team in San Jose, CA is seeking a Staff Robot & Automation Controls Engineer with 7-10 years of experience to lead and drive robot automation initiatives in a challenging and dynamic engineering environment. The media test team is responsible for the development and implementation of hardware/software/process/automation solutions in R&D environment, implementing those solutions at worldwide manufacturing sites, along with sustaining activities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead the design, programming, and integration of robotic automation systems for advanced manufacturing environments.
Architect and maintain robust control systems involving PLCs, conveyors, and robotic controllers as part of comprehensive automation solutions.
Perform complex robot path programming and optimization for high-precision, high-efficiency operations.
Oversee system commissioning efforts, including validation, testing, and troubleshooting of robotic and control systems.
Develop and maintain comprehensive technical documentation, including system designs, programming logic, and operational procedures.
Conduct system performance analysis and drive continuous improvement initiatives for enhanced efficiency, reliability, and scalability.

Qualifications
REQUIRED
Master's or Bachelor's degree program in Electrical Engineering, Robotics, Mechatronics or Automation Engineering, with Master's preferred.
Proficient in robot programming platforms such as Epson RC+, SPEL+, or Adept V+.
Extensive experience with PLC programming and HMI development.
Expertise in automation systems integrated with machine vision (e.g., Keyence or similar).
Strong programming capabilities in Python, C/C++, or similar languages.
Expert knowledge of motion control systems including servo drives, actuators, and VFDs.
Strong foundation in feedback control systems and PID tuning techniques.
Proven ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex integration issues involving both hardware and software.
In-depth knowledge of industrial safety standards, especially those related to robotics and automation.
Excellent communication and leadership skills; able to work effectively in cross-functional and global teams.
SKILLS
Experience leading automation projects across manufacturing sites, including stakeholder engagement and change management.
Track record of reducing cycle times or improving OEE through optimization.
Project management certifications or experience, such as PMP or Lean Six Sigma Green/Black Belt.
Vendor management and equipment selection experience, especially involving robotic integrators or automation solution providers.
