The Police Apprentice under close supervision, receives on-the-job training in basic law enforcement skills, traffic control, crime prevention, communications, first aid, crime scene search, arrest procedures and criminal investigation. Receives training in basic tools of criminology, fingerprinting, photography, and various communication systems. Assigned to public service positions answering telephones, responding to information requests, and performing general clerical work as required. Performs stock clerk duties issuing and receiving supplies.
Applicant must have graduated high school or been awarded their general education diploma (GED) at the time of selection. Highly qualified applicants will receive further processing that will include polygraph examination; medical exam; psychological exam; physical ability test; background interview; comprehensive background investigation and final selection interview.

Participates in on-the-job training in the areas of traffic control, investigations, crime prevention, communications, first aid and crime scene investigation procedures;

Assists in inventorying and handling seized and stolen property, which will be used as evidence in court;

Employment Standards
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to:
High school graduation or a GED issued by a state department of education certified by the Virginia State Department of Education.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Professional working proficiency, or higher, in a foreign language or American sign Language.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUREMENTS:
Must be a U.S. citizen or resident alien eligible for U.S. citizenship by age 21.
Must successfully complete a criminal background investigation, polygraph examination and be able to meet the public safety/police officer medical standards.
Must, within 6 months of reaching age 21, meet all eligibility requirements for Police Officer I and be selected for employment as a police officer;
Incumbents shall not use any tobacco products on and off duty starting at the time of appointment.
The incumbent must be willing to sign a Condition of Employment Agreement acknowledging the prohibition of the use of tobacco products both on and off duty.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Subsequent to a conditional job offer, applicants must complete a comprehensive medical examination, including drug testing and a vision standard not worse than 20/200, provided there have been at least three months of success wearing soft contact lenses. Must be able to perform essential job functions (reasonable accommodation may be made on a case-by-case basis).

POSITION
We are seeking a Washington View resident to serve as a Food Pantry Youth Apprentice. This is a contract position that will begin in April. The Food Pantry Youth Apprentice will assist the Food Pantry Coordinator in the operations of our small community food pantry and will work closely with staff from NHT, Building Bridges Across the River, Black Nurses Rock, and So What Else. This position will be contracted by NHT.
This position is DC-based. Due to the nature of the work, this position offers no remote work options. This position requires approximately 11 hours weekly, including all distribution days and preparation time.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Manage inventory
Schedule and supervise volunteers during operating hours
Coordinate with NHT on food deliveries and restocking
Maintain pantry organization and cleanliness standards
Process client intake and maintain confidential records

At the end of the 15 month program, the Apprentice is expected to understand electrical, hydraulic, mobile HVAC, engine and power train fundamentals and be fully accredited under the Department of Labor Apprenticeship. Requirements for our Rental Apprentice Technician positions include:
Self-starter able to work with limited supervision and meet deadlines.
Strong mechanical aptitude and excellent troubleshooting skills
Proficient in the use of a computer, Microsoft Office products and service software required in position; able to complete service reports and provide pertinent details for work orders.
Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to write service reports that accurately document diagnosis and repairs performed. Must prepare required documentation including work orders, parts lists, and time cards in an accurate and timely manner.
Able to read and understand operating manuals.
Must be able to occasionally operate heavy equipment.
Must be self-directed, organized, able to interact with coworkers, and work as an integral part of a team.
Must be able to work all shifts and overtime as needed to meet customer needs.
