Training for the apprenticeship will take place at our training facility, vendor locations externally, and throughout our service territory. Training will require travel during the apprenticeship, working with other teams within our Wisconsin territories. Upon completion of the apprenticeship program, our journey level Electrician will be assigned to the Northern or Southern Area of our Wisconsin territory. Residency Requirements There are emergency response and travel requirements in this role. Because of this, the selected applicant will be required to meet the 45-minute residency requirement under the contractual guidelines. What you will do * Constructs substations and maintains the electrical and related equipment of a substation in proper condition to give continuous satisfactory service. * Installs and maintains high voltage cables. * In some cases, rebuilds or enlarges substations and installs new equipment. * Installs and maintains signal and communication equipment. * Makes large power meter installations for large power customers. * May direct the work of an electrician's helper, electrician apprentice, laborer semi-skilled, and occasional temporary help. * Works on energized lines and equipment. Works with live line maintenance tools. Keeps informed on and abides by the required Safety Rules, Operating Practices and codes pertaining to all phases of substation work. * Keeps related records and makes reports as required. * Examples: Inspects and repairs circuit breakers, motors, generators, battery chargers, transformers, voltage regulators, lightning arresters; testing, filling, and charging storage batteries; inspecting customers' transformer vaults, and other electric utility equipment. * Performs other duties which are similar, related or incidental to this position. All apprenticeship programs have a great deal of math involved. If someone has struggled with math throughout their previous education (high school or college), they will probably struggle with this through their apprenticeship. During their apprenticeship, employees go to school during a normal school year (September to May). Plumbers and Steamfitter apprentices go for a full day every other week for a span of 4 years. Local 18 apprentices go for a full day every week for a span of 2 years. Apprentices are paid their wages for the days they spend in class. They are then able to bring back what they learn and apply it in their work environment. There are also night classes that are required throughout the 5 year program such as OSHA 30 hour, etc. The classes for night school are often paid for by the union, but the employee is not paid wages for any night classes. For Local 18, the night school classes are only paid for by the union if the student has 100% attendance. During the apprenticeship, there is also a work hour requirement for on-the-job training and experience. Apprentices usually do not have trouble meeting this requirement since they're typically working at Bassett throughout the full apprenticeship.
